Medical Consumables Market Brief, September 2026

What This Brief Is

A short monthly note from the factory side of the medical consumables trade: what tariffs did this month, what lead times look like on our lines, and what freight is doing on the lanes our buyers use. It is written for procurement desks, not for the trade press. No customer is ever identifiable in it.

Tariffs, United States

No new product specific actions on medical consumables this month. The January 2026 increases remain in force: medical gloves from China at 100%, face masks and respirators at 50%, syringes and needles at 100% since 2024. Gowns, drapes and other nonwoven apparel remain outside the product specific actions and carry the general China rates. The July 2026 move to country specific Section 301 rates put China at 12.5% for the general rate. The November 2026 review of exclusions and of the current China rate agreement is the next date that matters. Our tariff page carries the full table.

Freight

Ocean transit from South China to the US West Coast is running 18 to 22 days port to port and 30 to 35 days to the East Coast. Sihanoukville to the US West Coast adds roughly a week. Rates are quoted from the forwarder on the date of quotation and stated on the quotation. We do not publish rate levels here because they move faster than a monthly note.

Nonwovens

SMS and poly laminate supply from the nonwoven lines in our network is stable. Polypropylene resin pricing has been flat through the quarter. The factory gate price index for SMS gowns by level will start with the October edition, once we have three months of comparable data to show.

What We Are Seeing in Requests

US distributors asking for Cambodia origin on isolation gowns as a program requirement rather than a price question. International tender bidders asking for the ESG file with the first request rather than at award. Health systems asking for finished garment test reports instead of fabric roll certificates. All three are on the trail as standard.
